As a sports-loving young child, Coerte Voorhees, BIND ’13, bent and broke pairs of glasses all the time. So when he decided to enter the 2013 International Eye Wear Design Competition, sponsored by German company OWP Brillen, he knew where to focus his attention.
“My mind went right to a durable solution,” says Voorhees, who entered the competition while studying abroad in Berlin during his junior year. “The frame is made up of three pieces,” he explains, “all of which can be injection-molded for quality and quick, inexpensive manufacturing. A ball-in-socket hinge allows for easy and safe user interaction.”
The design was a winner. Voorhees took home first prize in the competition, beating out 72 other students from 27 countries.
