Several times during my conversations with the departments and committees on campus, the issue of not knowing what was reported by various committees, consultants, etc. was brought up as an issue that needed to be addressed. I hope the following is a first step in making this information more available to you.
Four documents have been posted and made available on L-Connect. Log on and click on the “Academic Resources” tab and then look at the “Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost” channel.
The Stevens Strategy Report is a set of Power Point slides that summarizes their findings and recommendations concerning Academic Affairs Organization and Department Head Training. As I stated at the Open Forum, I plan to move forward rather than look backward. The agendas for the meetings with the Academic Department Heads and other members of the Provost’s Office have been changed with the primary purpose being the development of an academic strategic plan for the Institute.
The Rickes Report is an analysis of our use of the instructional space at the Institute. It recommends reconfiguration of classroom space to better fit our current classes, better use of block scheduling, and additional academic space for classrooms and specialized instructional spaces. Our current usage is less than optimal.
The First Year Seminar Report summarizes the results found for the first semester it was used. It finds that first year academic performance improved, the use of campus resources increased, the students believe the course met its goals, and the instructors were highly rated by the students.
The Facilities Planning document was assembled from information obtained in Fall 2007 from the Academic Department Heads and departmental strategic plans. It projects growth and resource requirements for each department out to 2012. This document is already outdated. It does not accurately reflect all of our current academic programs and does not include changes in the economic and academic environment that occurred since it was prepared. However, it is an interesting look at our thinking from two years ago. I have asked the Academic Department Heads to update this document so that it might be used for future planning.
